History

1948 Donora Smog – Air pollution incident in Pennsylvania which lead to ~50% of the town falling ill and the death of 20 people. Many credit this incident as the catalyst to the 1970 Clean Air Act.

Ducktown, Tennessee – Open roasting of copper ore in the area between 1880 – 1905 released large volumes of sulphur dioxide and other pollutants into the air decimating vegetation and wildlife for miles around the mining operations. Effects of this continue to this day as some areas have not recovered at all.
